Rattlesnake roundup event? Is there actually an event called that? As it appears there is and it has been happening in Sweetwater Texas for quiet some time. This is one of the most interesting current events that involves rounding up some 5,000 pounds of rattlesnakes all piled up in one place.

The yearly event is held in Sweetwater Texas and to people who are familiar with it is known as the Sweetwater rattlesnake roundup event.

It was originate in 1958 and it is one of the largest such events in the world. The purpose behind the event is said to be rattlesnake population control.

According to reports, the event attracts about 30,000 people annually and it accounts for a few million dollars worth of local business. Nearly 5,000 pounds of rattlesnakes are caught and brought to the Sweetwater rattlesnake roundup event where they mostly get killed for their skin and meat. Apparently some of the snakes do make it out of the event alive when they get sold by the snake hunters for large profits.

The Rattlesnake Roundup is also known as Rattlesnake Rodeos. According to Wikipedia these events are common in the rural Midwest and Southern United States.

According to Grindtv.com, during the event rattlesnakes get sexed and measured for their length. When done, almost all snakes are killed and their meat gets cooked. As for the skin, it gets turned into belts, wallets and other novelty items. Trophies and cash prizes are also often given to people who participate in the event.
