Catholics from around the world have their eyes on Rome for a new pontiff as the old Pope leaves the Vatican.

Pope’s resignation makes him the 2nd pope in nearly 600 years who has stepped down as the leader of the Catholic world. This is a rare event since almost all popes had served until they died. Pope Gregory XII was the last pope who resigned his commission as the Roman Catholic Church leader in 1415.

CNN reports that pope leaves the Vatican due to old age and lack of needed strength to carry on with papal duties. Pope Benedict who was born Joseph Ratzinger, a native of Bavaria in Germany, became the elected Leader of the Roman Catholic church in 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II. He served as the 265th Pope from 2005 to 2013.

Rumors and speculations started to brew immediately following the news of Pope’s resignation. In an interview with CNN, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said, “There isn’t any disease specifically — it’s all to do with deterioration and weakness in his body, as the holy pontiff has said in his statement.” Lombardi also mentioned to CNN that Pope Benedict had the right and the duty to resign.

Pope leaves the Vatican during a time that there appears to be much uncertainty in the world.  Some extremists have even made suggestions that depending on whether the next pope is white or black, it may have an apocalyptic significance.
